Tennis Elbow/Golfer’s Elbow (Lateral/Medial Epicondylopathy)

Tennis elbow is commonly an overuse injury involving the extensor muscles of the wrist and forearm. Most commonly the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) tendon is the affected muscle. It can present with pain and inflammation on the outside of the elbow, and pain that increases with wrist extension or gripping activities like shaking hands and opening jars.

Golfer’s elbow is also typically due to overuse. This condition involves the flexor muscles of the forearm, specifically the pronator teres flexor carpi radialis, palmaris longus, flexor digitorum superficialis, and flexor carpi ulnaris. Golfer’s elbow presents with a slow onset of pain of dull, achy discomfort along the inside of the elbow that can become sharp with activity.

Additional elbow anatomy

The arm is made up of three bones that join together to form a hinge joint at the elbow. The upper arm bone or humerus connects from the shoulder to the elbow forming the top of the hinge joint. The lower arm or forearm consists of two bones, the radius and the ulna. These bones connect the wrist to the elbow forming the bottom portion of the hinge joint. The elbow joint is actually three separate joints within the synovial capsule of the elbow.

Treatment of elbow conditions

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is one of the best forms of treatment available for chronic elbow pain. This treatment is designed to decrease inflammation, generate new blood vessel formation to the treatment zone resulting in increased oxygenation to the target. Our shockwave machine will also recruit migratory stem cells to the treatment area to aid in the healing process.

Laser Therapy

In severe cases, laser therapy can be used in combination with shockwave to expedite the healing process. Our laser is designed to target light receptors within our cells in order to stimulate certain metabolic pathways in the body that aid in blood flow and energy production.
